The hit movie Mama Mia centers on a young lady whose Greek wedding is around the corner and who dreams of having her father walk her down the aisle. We have to hand it down to the directors and producers of this film for their excellent taste in choosing the perfect filming location. The movie was filmed in Skiathos, Damouchari, and Skopelos. These three are the most beautiful locations with fascinating backdrops. They make the ideal place to have a destination wedding in Greece.

Skiathos
Are you looking to relive the Mama Mia movie and have the wedding of your dreams? Then, on your venture to explore where the movie was filmed in Greece, you should start with Skiathos. There is a national airport here, and this island offers you easy accessibility to other ideal wedding destinations such as the Pelion Region and Skopelos Island, which are also locations where Mamma Mia was filmed. In Skiathos, some of its pristine sandy beaches were filmed in the movie.
There is also the port where the three dads met for the first time. You can also tour the area around St. Nikolaos Bell Tower, where Sophie sent her first letters. When filming this wedding, it is believed that the cast slept and dined at famous hotels in Skiathos such as Mandraki, Skiathos Princess Hotel, and Asprolithos. Bearing in mind that the film was shot over a decade ago, these places may not look exactly the same as in the movie.

Skopelos
In the Mama Mia movie, Skopelos was referred to as Kalokairi. This island is located off the coast of Greece, some of its beaches were featured in the movie on several occasions. This place is home to the famous Mountainous Peninsula described by the producers. The same place where Sophie left for her wedding and also where she had a picnic with her three dads and jumped over a cliff into a beach located on the south of Agnodas. Also, the venue for the ceremony was at the Agios Ioannis chapel at the Skylopes harbor. The interior was, however, inspired by another local church known as the Panayitsa Pirgou.
As mentioned earlier, the best way to explore locations where Mamma Mia was filmed is by landing at the Skiathos National Airport. Note that there is no airport in Skopelos, and it can only be accessed via a ferry. There are terrific sandy beaches that can make an excellent backdrop for destination wedding photography in Greece. Accommodation is also available. You can also ask around, and the locals can direct you to the best hotels on Skopelos. Or you can stay at Skopelos Village Hotel, Adrina Hotel or the Prince Stafylos Hotel. These are all places where the Mamma Mia cast resided when filming the movie.

Damouchari
On the eastern side of Greece lies Damouchari Island. Several scenes were shot on this island. For instance, the first meet-up between Julie Walters and Meryl Strep was shot here. And it was also the location of the fictional hotel Villa Donna. However, the scenes from the hotel were mostly shot at the Hollywood studio. Other images shot from here were also combined with those shots at Skiathos and Skopelos. The blue skies, turquoise water, and bleached white beach views are some of the reasons why the producers chose Damouchari, Skopelos, and Skiathos as the ideal location to film Mama Mia.
If you are a big fan of Mamma Mia, having a Greek wedding in any of these three locations is a sure way of having your cake and eating it too.
