Speaking from the Heart: How to Write Vows as Authentic as Your Love Story

The exchange of vows is the gravitational center of your wedding day. As a documentary photographer, it is my favorite moment to capture—not because of the decor, but because of the honesty in your voices.

Writing your own vows can feel daunting, but you don't need to be a poet. You just need to be you. Here is a guide to crafting promises that resonate, along with inspiration for every style of love.

Wedding vows

1. The Documentary Approach to Brainstorming

Instead of looking for "perfect" words, look for specific memories.

  • The "Small" Things: Don't just say "I love you." Mention the way they make your coffee, the specific look they give you when you're nervous, or the first time you knew they were "the one" in a crowded Athenian cafe.

  • Promises: What are you promising? Beyond the "forever," think about the daily support, the shared laughter, and the way you’ll navigate the "Meltemi" winds of life together.

2. Tips for a Heartfelt Delivery

  • Keep it Brief: Aim for 1 to 2 minutes. This leaves space for the emotion to breathe without feeling rushed.

  • Practice Out Loud: Words sound different when spoken. Practicing helps you find your natural rhythm.

  • Don't Worry About Tears: From a photographer's perspective, a shaky voice or a pause to wipe a tear is beautiful. It’s true, and truth always looks stunning in photos.

3. Inspiration for Every Journey

Traditional & Timeless

"I promise to stand by you in times of joy and sorrow, in abundance and scarcity. With this vow, I give you my heart and my unwavering devotion, for as long as we both shall live."

Poetic & Cinematic

"You are the poetry I never knew how to write. With every beat of my heart, I vow to treasure you as the greatest gift in my life, holding your hand through every joy and every sea we cross together."

Modern & Real

"I vow to love you on the good days and the bad, through our greatest triumphs and our smallest arguments. I promise to always hear you out and to build a life full of laughter, deep conversation, and endless adventures."

Lighthearted & Fun

"I promise to love you as much as I love our sunset dinners, and to always share my dessert—even when I really don't want to. I vow to be your partner in crime and to laugh with you, even at your worst jokes."

4. Photographer’s Request: Don’t Read from a Phone

If there is one piece of advice I give all my couples, it’s this: Write your vows on a beautiful piece of paper or in a small notebook.

  • Visuals: A phone screen creates an unnatural glow on your face and looks "cold" in photographs.

  • Heirloom: A handwritten note is a physical artifact of your promise—something you can frame or keep in your [Wedding Album] forever.

Final Thoughts: Let Your Voice Be Heard

Your vows are the soundtrack to the most important images I will take. Whether they are whispered in a tiny Cycladic chapel or spoken aloud on a cliffside in Santorini, let them be honest. The most beautiful words are the ones that sound like you.
